QUINTA DAS HEREDIAS

Vinho Verde, Portugal

"This emerging port house has already produced some very fine ports despite being only recently established. Mauricette Mordant, who helped found Champagne house Vranken, bought the historic monastery of Quinta do Convento (San Pedro das Aguias) on the Rio Távora outright from Vranken in 1996. It also includes the quintas of Espinhos and Calcado as well as Heredias – comprising 82 ha in the Cima Corgo. All the ports will eventually be entirely estate produced, most of the grapes having been sold off until 1999. Winemaker Jean Hugues Gros makes well defined, balanced ports with expressive fruit across a range of styles. Though some wines necessarily include older bought-in wines, all are impressive including a marvellously complex 40-year old Tawny. Ruby has excellent fruit for this level while Vintage Port from 2001 shows both elegance and depth. A traditional Late Bottled Vintage also shows good style while a dry White Port from 100% Malvasia Fina has good balance between spiced fruit characters and more nutty tertiary flavours. Some Douro red is also made but the emphasis is on port." -Wine Behind the Label (Link here)
