HAGER

Austria

Profound, full of character and special – this description not only applies to Matthias Hager’s wines but to the vintner himself. Many years of experience in his family business have motivated and encouraged Matthias to cultivate his vineyards according to the biodynamic Demeter method.

Matthias was challenged very early with taking over the responsibility for the family business. Therefor, he had already much experience in viticulture which brought him over the years to think about new ways to get best quality as well as keeping the nature alive. His consideration brought him inevitably to organic and at least to biodynamic cultivation (organic according to Demeter). Keeping a natural balance in the vineyard, having much understanding for the plants and insects, spontaneous fermentation and making wine with little additives are the logical consequences. Then he wine has plenty of time to mature before it gets bottled.

Today the company includes about 12,5ha areas of vine around the small wine-growing village Mollands. The strength of the familiy business is its diversity. The Kamptal exists of different kinds of soil - from loess, loam, clay to different varieties of primary rock. Matthias knows well how to use this diversity for his wines. This took him to the idea to create two different quality lines apart from white and red: a blue line and a brown line.
